The Wine Mill History.
John Stephenson & Sons has been around since 1914, the same year that Charlie Chaplin starred in 'Making a Living' and the Panama Canal was first opened. It was founded by the current Managing Director's grandfather, the 'John Stephenson' of the company name, and was originally set up as a bakery in Manchester Road, Nelson, four years later he progressed to the grocery sector, then the company continued without any major change until 1946 when John Stephenson & Sons (Nelson) Ltd was formed. The Directors at that time were John & Mary Stephenson and their three sons, Edward, Denis and Aidan
In 1956 the company became one of the founder members of "Spar" and in 1960 an off licence was granted purely for retail sales, by 1965 the wholesale side of the business had begun to develop, finally overtaking the grocery side of the business which ceased in 1976, leaving John Stephenson & Sons as a wholesale and retail wine and spirit merchants, by this time John and Mary had died leaving their three sons as the directors.

By the beginning of 1986 the company had outgrown the Manchester Road site and new premises were required, Darwil House was purchased in May of that year, and converted into a cash & carry warehouse, leaving Manchester Road for retail purposes only.
In 2002 due to the increasing demand for wine, a decision was taken to build a Fine Wine Cellar and retail shop within the Darwil House premises, this was completed in January 2003 and 'The Wine Mill' was born. On February 1st 2003 the Manchester Road shop closed it's doors for the last time and all business transferred to Darwil House

The company is still independent and family owned, run by joint Managing Directors, John Stephenson and Ann Pearson, who are the grandchildren of the founder. Three members of the fourth generation also work for the company, ensuring the continuity of the family commitment.
